Hitomi, jeune lycéenne possédant le don de cartomancie, est téléportée malgré elle sur la planète Gaïa où elle fait la connaissance du roi Van Fanel du royaume de Fanélia et du chevalier Allen Schezar du royaume d'Astria. Tous deux luttent contre l'empire Zaïbacher à bord de leurs guymelefs : Escaflowne et Sheherazade. Hitomi se retrouve alors au cœur du conflit.
