Acteur allemand passé du théâtre au cinéma muet et interprète fétiche de Fritz Lang (Dr. Mabuse en 1922 et 1933, Rotwang dans Metropolis en 1927), il poursuivit sa carrière sous le Troisième Reich avant de tomber dans l’oubli, mourut en Autriche en 1955 et, plusieurs fois marié, eut pour épouse la scénariste Thea von Harbou (1914–1920), qui le quitta pour épouser Fritz Lang en 1922.
