ビートルズ解散後のさまざまなトラブルで母国イギリスに嫌気が差したジョン・レノンは、1971年9月にニューヨークへ移住。そのころアメリカはベトナム戦争下で反戦運動が広がり、若者たちに多大な影響力を持つジョンはその動きに巻き込まれていく。1980年12月に凶弾に倒れるまで同地で過ごしたおよそ9年間が、本人の言葉や未発表音源、数多くの秘蔵映像でよみがえる。
