Década de 1960. A geração do pós-guerra da Alemanha Ocidental, em conflito direto com seus pais, tentava encontrar seu lugar. Envergonhados por seu passado nazista, os jovens estavam desiludidos com o capitalismo anticomunista e um aparato de estado no qual eles acreditavam ver tendências fascistas. O movimento estudantil explodiu em 1966. Dessa juventude fervilhante surgiram a jornalista Ulrike Meinhof, o advogado Horst Mahler, o cineasta Holger Meins, bem como os estudantes Gudrun Ensslin e Andreas Baader.
